The article containes an analysis of the views of Clement of Alexandria on education and pedagogy as related to symbolism, which is understood as a fundamental attitude of thought. We concentrate on the problems of mass and elite education, and the relation between systematic education and an experience of knowledge of God. In conclusion we show relevance of the treatment of educational issues by Clement in the context of contemporary philosophy of education.
