The article covers the attempt to create, equip and donate to Russia Australian
military hospital. This attempt was made in 1916 on the initiative of the Australian
opera star Nellie Melba as a sign of Australia’s respect and gratitude to the Russian
people which was the Australian ally in the First World War battlefields. The offer of
Melba aroused the great enthusiasm among the Australians, but commenced
fundraising campaign has been interrupted since the military authorities of Australia
and the United Kingdom considered it inappropriate to send Army medical forces
outside the British Empire. However, an attempt to equip and donate the hospital to
Russian allies became convincing evidence of the growing sympathy of Australians to
Russia.
